As Diamondback approached the pretty lavender unicorn, he couldn’t help but stare at her violet mane, which was the reason he didn’t notice the low-lying display case right in front of him. Before he realized it, he was on his face, surrounded by broken glass, ornate rings, and other little trinkets he’d made in his spare time (which he seemed to have quite a bit of lately). The mare turned around and looked down at him with a look, first of surprise, then concern.
“Oh, goodness! Are you okay?” She said, her tone light and sing-song, with a delicate hint of concern.
“Uhm, yeah I’m fine…” He stammered, his voice low and scratchy from being in the heat of his workshop so long. He slowly got up until he was standing on all four legs. “So, uh, welcome to my jewelery store. My name is Diamondback. Can I help you?” He hoped his immense discomfort wasn’t detected by this beautiful mare. It wasn’t, apparently, because she had picked up on something entirely different.
“Wait, you’re Diamondback? Skyheart’s roommate!” Diamondback cringed a little on the inside, expecting the worst: chewing out for ‘betraying’ Skyheart, among other things he didn’t want to consider. He expected any number of things to happen. “Pleased to finally meet you! I’m Love Letters.” was not the expected response.
Diamondback looked back her, dumbfounded. “Um, hi, nice to meet you too…” he said, still stunned that she hadn’t said anything about what happened between Sky and him. “So,” he said, trying to pick the conversation back up, “I noticed you looking at my necklace up there.” he indicated the piece of jewelery at the top of the ceiling-high display case, where he had noticed her looking before he came out.
“Your necklace? You mean you made that?” she said, an awed tone to her voice.
“Yeah. Everything you see in here, from the extraordinary to the mundane, from the exotic to the common, all made by hoof, by me.” said Diamondback, more than a little pride swelling into his chest as he watched Letters look around in awe.
“Wow… that’s very impressive… anyway, I’m not here to buy anything, I was here to see if Sky wanted to go get some coffee with me. Do you know where she is?”
‘Knowing her, probably at the local pub, getting drunk out of her mind…’ he thought to himself, but said “No, sorry, I have no idea…”, and began to walk to the back to get the broom to sweep up the broken glass, hoping to Luna that would put an end to the topic.
And it did, in a way. Love Letters bit her lip and tapped her hoof in careful consideration, a concerned look sweeping over her face before she turned her eyes back up, “Well, in that case would you like to join me?” Diamondback stopped dead in his tracks and turned to look at her to see if she was serious. He could tell by the look in her eyes that she was.
He suddenly became very aware that he had left his smock on and that he was practically covered in soot from the furnace. “Um… uh.. w… we-… well, I’d l… love to but… but I…” he stuttered as he fumbled over his words, trying to think of a way to accept the invitation and give himself enough time to make himself more… presentable.
“Oh, if you already have plans then I guess I can just…” she started for the door.
“No, wait!” she stopped and looked at him with those ice blue eyes. Luna, those eyes… “What I meant to say was I’d love to go with you, I just need some time to take a shower, if you don’t mind waiting?” he asked nervously.
She giggled slightly at his blatant shyness, causing him to blush slightly. “Of course I don’t mind waiting, just don’t take too long!” she sang cheerily, her tone dipping and adding subtle, yet very deliberate, inflections to her words.
Diamondback trotted quickly through the curtain, turned left immediately to go upstairs and then down the hall to his bedroom to take a shower.
Well, that was all very sudden. Yesterday I was working in my workshop (much like I have been lately, mostly to avoid awkward encounters with Skyheart), when I hear the bell above the door to the store ring, indicating a costumer has arrived.
since Skyheart was away on “business” (which I believe is her word for “getting drunk again”), and Gallifrey was Luna knows where, I headed out to see who had decided to stop by. I did not expect what I saw.
It was that mare!! Skyheart’s friend! Luckily she had her back to me, so I managed to slip back behind the curtain that separates my workshop from the store relatively unnoticed, but she must have heard me pull it closed, because she turned around and looked expectantly at the curtain. Luna, those eyes!
I waited a few minutes until she left then went back to my latest creation, with the image of those piercing eyes embedded in my head.
now she’s back again! I think I just might face her this time… wish me luck…
So, I’m almost out of that place where I need alcohol to sleep at night. That’s good, yeah? Well, I’ve cut it down to one drink a night, at least.
I suppose this… attitude, I guess you could say, I’ve been stuck in lately is from my visit to Canterlot. I mean, I’ve been either moping or drinking since then, so it makes sense.
First off, the case didn’t pay nearly as much as I’d hoped. Yeah, I know I usually don’t do it for the money, but this was a high-profile case and a lot of work, so I expected to earn enough to pay the bills and put just a bit aside for Gallifrey. No such luck.
I’ve decided to save on water by bathing in rainclouds.
On top of that, being in Canterlot just brought up old memories I really didn’t need to revisit. Familiar places and sights and all that. And when we visited the Castle, I nearly crawled out of my skin. But Love Letters really wanted a tour, so I put up with it for her sake. Let’s just say, I’ve got a bit of history in that city.
Yes, things have returned to some semblance of normality. Letters has been dropping by every so often, to check up on me, and all, which I appreciate more than anything. She really is a great friend. Diamondback and I have agreed to forget that little… incident. It was a mistake for both of us and we’ve decided to move on and try to be friends, again.
Oh, and Love Letters has decided I need a fillyfriend. She’s been asking around to see if her friends know anypony I’d be good with. Oh, the irony.
Right, so everything has finally returned to normal.
Well, almost normal… we’ve both returned to our normal schedules of me running my store, making the income, and then Skyheart going out and blowing it all on booze every night… sometimes I swear I’ll wring that- no… no, I’m not THAT pony anymore…
Anyway, really the only thing that’s changed is the atmosphere of the place. It just always feels like there’s a sense of… well, just tension, almost… I don’t quite know how to describe it…
However, there has been a new mare that’s been coming around the shop lately… she’s the loveliest shade of lavender with the most gorgeous violet mane and THE PRETTIEST pair of ice blue eyes…
Aw, who am I kidding? She’s friends with Skyheart, who’s no doubt told her that I’m a total ass… she probably wouldn’t even give me the time of day…
Well, I better get to bed. I’ve got a big order to fill tomorrow.
